Our food plays a major role when it comes to dictating how we feel, our physical health and on our everyday life. With all the fast food options and especially when we eat outside, it’s hard to eat healthy food and in many ways knowingly or unknowingly we consume foods that are unhealthy for our bodies.
We can’t change our eating habits immediately. And developing healthy eating habits takes time. But if you apply what you are going to read in this post then you will find you are making good food choices and staying away from eating unhealthy foods.
To apply the procedure that I’m about to share you don’t need to be a cook. Almost anybody with no to minimum cooking knowledge can apply this technique and fix their eating habits.
To make this work for you, all you have to do is to be mindful about what you eat and have a curiosity about knowing what ingredients go into making your food.
So, without further ado let’s check out how cooking your own food helps you to develop healthy eating habits.
This is how cooking your own food makes you eat healthy
There’s a big difference between cooking your own food and eating food that someone prepared for you.
When you prepare your food you are more connected in the process of making it. Preparing your own food involves you in the cooking process and you are much more aware of the ingredients and how much of it goes into preparing the meal.
It can be as small as making coffee for yourself every morning.
Whenever you are preparing your coffee, you are seeing how much sugar, milk and cream you are putting in your coffee.
If you put sugar and cream in small quantities then you are aware of the fact that you are not consuming excessive amounts of sugar and cream.
Seeing how much of one thing you are putting inside to make a dish in your eyes is a crucial factor that will help you make better food choices.
When we are conscious and preparing our food like coffee in the morning – we are not going to add excessive amounts of sugar or cream in it. We will put an amount which feels right according to our knowledge.
Most of us can judge between what’s adequate and what’s excess when we add the ingredients with our own hands.
But the story is entirely different when someone prepares the food for us. I’m especially talking about when we eat outside and it’s not a home-cooked meal.
When we eat outside we don’t really think about what ingredients they used to make the dish and how much of one item like sugar, cream, butter, oil etc are used to prepare the dish.
That’s two very different pictures. When we cook we are more involved in the cooking process and we know exactly what goes into making the dish and in what quantities. Where when we eat outside we are not involved in the cooking process and we don’t know exactly what they used to make the dish and the ingredients used in what quantities.
When we eat outside mostly we judge the food on how it looks and how it tastes. Generally, we never focus on what ingredients it is made up of and the quantities of one ingredient.
Thus we might end up eating many food items that may taste delicious and looks great but nutritionally might be unhealthy for our body.
When we eat outside there’s no way we are going to find it out and even if we find it out by reading the food labels then it’s hard to put that into perspective.
Because it’s a different picture when we read the food labels and when we get to see the amount of the ingredients in real life.
It’s a fact that when we eat outside we consume a lot of sugar, oil and fat. When we just read the food labels we are not fully aware if it’s the right amount or excessive. But in reality, if we cooked that dish ourselves we would never dare to put that much oil, fat or sugar in it.
This happens many times when we eat outside and don’t choose the right place to eat and don’t pick the right food items.
When we are not fully aware of the food we are eating daily it increases the chances of developing unhealthy eating habits.

How to fix and develop healthy eating habits
Because of our busy lifestyle, it’s not practical to prepare every meal that we eat and we can’t avoid depending on outside food.
To make better food choices you need to look at the food labels and what ingredients it uses and in how much quantities. But you also need to have an idea of what would that look like in real life. When you get involved with cooking you will have better knowledge of judging between healthy and unhealthy food just by looking at the amounts of ingredients used to prepare the dish. And it gets better with time.
To eat more healthier food you need to ask one question and that is if I prepared this food then how much sugar, butter and oil will I put in? If we find out that our everyday meal contains much more sugar and fat then we need to take action and rethink about our food choices.
It’s better not to eat a flavoured coffee from a restaurant outlet which contains more than 25 grams of sugar in it. If you drink 2-3 savings of that coffee then you are consuming a high amount of sugar which is unhealthy for your body.
So, it’s better to not consume that flavoured coffee which contains high sugar and instead choose a coffee that’s low in sugar and cream.
If you carefully look at the food labels and judge between healthy and unhealthy food then over time it will help you eat more healthy food and avoid unhealthy food items. This can leave an impact on your body and health and you will be much more healthier in life.
Small steps like this can help you to consume less amount of unhealthy food items and you will feel the difference in your body.
So from today onwards take a close look at the food labels and to put that into perspective just imagine what those ingredients will look like in real life.
If you can do this then whether you can cook or not you can fix your eating habits and without compromising on taste or eating diet foods, you can eat more healthier foods.
