Do You Need Rest Days For Push Ups? The Right Procedure

Depending on the situation sometimes you might need rest days for doing push-ups and sometimes you can do push-ups without any rest days.

In this post, I will break down – do you need rest days for push ups and how many days you should do pushups in a week so that you will not face any workout injuries.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in and find out if you need rest days for push-ups or if you can do pushups every day.

Do you need rest days for push ups?

When you are only doing less number of pushups or you are doing pushups as a part of a circuit training then you can do pushups every day and you don’t need any rest day for pushups. You can do pushups without rest days only when you are doing 20-30 pushups per day.

But if you are doing pushups in large numbers or doing multiple sets of pushups then it’s recommended that you take rest days after an intense pushup workout session.

When you are doing a large number of pushups, you can do pushups every other day or do pushups for 4-5 days and take rest on other days.

You need to remember that after one intense pushup workout session your muscle tissue gets damaged and it needs some time to repair itself. Thus after doing multiple sets of pushups you should take a day off and if you feel your muscles are still sore from the workout after 24 hours then you should take rest for 2 days or 48 hours.

Should I do pushups every day or have rest days?

You can only do pushups every day when you are doing a limited number of pushups and your body can handle the stress. It’s recommended to take rest days when you are doing 70-100 pushups or more per day.

If you do pushups in large numbers without any rest days then after some time you may experience workout injuries. Thus you shouldn’t do pushups every day if you are doing 3-5 sets of pushups and in each set, you are doing pushups until failure.

How many days a week should I do push ups?

It’s recommended to do pushups for 3-5 days a week. However, you should listen to your body to find out if you need more rest days.

When you are doing moderate amounts of pushups then you can do pushups for 4-5 days. But if you have been doing pushups for some time and you do 100-150 pushups per day then you might need to do pushups for 3-4 days a week.

The real fact is the more pushups you do or depending on the intensity of your pushup workout you might need 2 days of rest after one pushup workout.

Where if you do moderate amounts of pushups then your body can repair its damaged tissues within one rest day.

Is it Safe to Do Push-Ups Every Day?

It’s safe to do pushups every day when you are doing less than 30 pushups per day or doing pushups as a part of circuit training.

Doing pushups every day is not recommended for those who do pushups in large numbers or do 3-5 sets of pushups in one pushup workout session.

When Should You Rest From Push-Ups?

After completing one intense pushup workout session or doing 3-7 sets of different types of pushups you should take rest days. Now, how many days of rest you need after a pushup workout will depend on the intensity of your workout.

If you are doing low to moderate amounts of pushups then you might need one rest day.

Whereas if you train heavily and do multiple pushup sets and train until failure then you might need 2 days rest.

Always you should try to feel your body and look for any muscle soreness. If you feel there is soreness in your biceps and shoulder muscles after a pushup workout then you should take rest until there is less stiffness and less pain in your muscles.

Sometime after one intense pushup workout session, you might need 48-72 hours to get proper recovery.

Do you need rest days for pushups? There is no one-word answer to it.

If you do less number of pushups and only do 1-2 sets of pushups then you might not need any rest days for pushups. Where if you do multiple sets of pushups and do pushups until failure then you will need rest days.

The best way to find out if you need any rest day after a pushup workout session is to look at your body. If you notice any muscle soreness or muscle pain after one pushup workout session then you will need rest days.
